Department of Biology

Time Conflict Permits

When do I use this type of permit?

When two classes have an overlap or there is not at least 15 minutes between them, a time conflict permit is needed. Sometimes more time between classes is required such as when a class meets in an off campus location and requires more travel time.

What is the procedure?

Print the form and have both professors sign the form. You will need a department stamp for each signature.

If there are two departments involved, the department who gives the second stamp may issue the permit if you have not registered for either one. If you have already registered for one class and are getting the permit so you can register for the second class, then you must take the form to the department for the class for which you have not registered. Departments cannot issue permits for classes in another department.

Example 1: You registered for Cell Biology. Now you want to take Organic Chemistry I and there is a time conflict. Have the Chemistry professor sign the form and then the Biology professor. Go to SCA 203 Undergraduate Biology Office to obtain the Biology department stamp. Then go the Chemistry office (CHE 205) to obtain the Chemistry department stamp and the permit. Since you are asking for a permit to take the chemistry class which has a conflict with your Cell Bio class for which you are already registered, the Department of Biology cannot give you the permit.

Example 2: You registered for Organic Chemistry and you want to take Cell Biology and there is a time conflict. Have the Chemistry professor sign the form and get the Chemistry Department stamp. Then obtain the signature of the Biology professor. Go to SCA 203 Undergraduate Biology Office to obtain the department stamp and the permit. Since you are asking for a permit to take the Biology class which has a conflict with your Chemistry class for which you are already registered, the Department of Biology must issue the permit, not the Chemistry Department.

Please note, the Department of Biology rarely grants time conflict permits for labs due to the strict attendance policy for labs.
