Course Online and Paper Permits

If you know the rules-follow the link in the useful links box to the Department of Biology online permit request form. Otherwise, read the instructions that follow.

When do I use this type of permit?

You use the online permit request when the system does not recognize your prerequisites. You also use this form for any course that says a permit is required, such as selected topics (BSC 4933 and BSC 5931) or other class that requires a permit.

Some classes require you to take a lecture and lab in the same semester, or take the lecture with or before the lab. For example: you cannot take the Cell Bio lab (PCB3023L) if you are not currently enrolled in Cell Bio lecture (PCB 3023) or have not already passed the course in a previous semester. Another example is Bio 1 or Bio 2 lecture and lab. Please read this flyer which explains the rules for registering for these classes.

When requesting permits for courses because you have coursesfrom out of state, courses from private Florida schools, AP credits or other instances where your SASS shows that you have received equivalent credit but OASIS cannot recognize that fact, then you use the online permit request form.

How do I know if I'm ready to request a permit?

Before you proceed to the online form, be sure that your SASS shows that you have the prerequisites because the advisor is going to use that information to determine if you are eligible for a course. If all the information needed is in the SASS report then click on the link to the online permit request form.

I took the course but it's not showing on my record

Remember to request an official transcript so the credit will be sent to the Registrar. In the meantime, the information may not have been processed so you need to follow these procedures.

  • If you took the course at another Florida public school, then you must use the paper permit request form and attach a printout showing that you took and passed the class elsewhere. This can be a FACTS.org printout from that school, an unofficial transcript or copy of a transcript to name a few. Bring, mail or fax the information to Biology Advising using the information on the form.
  • If you took the class at any other school than a public Florida school using standard Florida course codes, then you need to follow the instructions for Course Evaluation.
I'm an incoming NSE student.

At the bottom of the online form, there is a comment box. Be sure to 1) Identify yourself as a NSE student and 2) Indicate the date your prerequisites were approved by the departments with proof of unofficial transcripts.

I thought AP credits didn't need permits any more?

If your AP scores were submitted electronically this is true. If not, then you still need permits.
