Marine Biology Concentration
The Department of Biology offers a selective concentration in Marine Biology that
emphasizes classroom and field training. Conditional admittance to the concentration
is based on maintaining a 3.0 Major GPA to enter and remain within the concentration.
The Conditional Access Marine Biology Concentration provides students with a wide
latitude of marine related courses while maintaining a rigorous grounding in basic
biology and the sciences.

The course requirements provide a general background in modern biology and a specific
background in four critical areas: Cell Biology, Genetics, Ecology, and Physiology.
Students may apply as many as four credit hours of Undergraduate Research toward
the major. The Department strongly encourages students to take advantage of this
opportunity, particularly if they plan to seek advanced degrees. Students may satisfy
the remaining major requirements from a variety of courses, allowing students to
tailor the degree to their individual interests.
The concentration is structured around a majority of marine-related classes taught
in the Department of Biology, Department of Geology, Department of Geography, and
College of Marine Sciences. In addition to biology courses, students need thorough
preparation in other natural sciences to be competitive for jobs or for further
study. A modern biology curriculum is built on a strong foundation of mathematics,
chemistry and physics.
