Financial Support
The Biology department provides rewarding teaching opportunities for graduate students.
Biology teaching assistants earn up to $15,000 for a nine-month academic appointment,
and have nearly all tuition and fees waived. Teaching assistants are also eligible
for between $1,750 – 3,500 in summer support. Teaching assistants instruct undergraduate
laboratories or work with small undergraduate discussion groups in courses such
as introductory biology, ecology, anatomy, physiology or microbiology
Individual professors fund graduate students to perform research in their laboratories
using extramural grant funding. The stipends are equivalent to teaching assistantships.
Presidential Fellowships for doctoral students provide $20,000 per year stipends,
renewable for up to five years of support for outstanding doctoral candidates. Applicants
with exceptional credentials are recommended to the Graduate Dean for consideration
to be appointed as a Presidential Fellow.
