Non-Thesis M.S. Programsnonthesis

Programs & Degree Requirements

We offer two different Masters degrees that do not require the student to develop a thesis.

  • Masters in Biology, Non-Thesis track, Concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology
  • Masters in Microbiology, Non-Thesis track

Both degrees have similar course requirements:

  • Total of 30 credits required (approved by CMMB)
  • 26 hours must be in structured courses approved by CMMB and include:
    • BSC6932 (1 hrs) Masters Qualifying Exam during final semester
    • 15 additional hrs of credit must be at 6000-level
    • 15 credits must be in CMMB courses
  • The 4 unstructured hours can be met by BSC6930 (1 hr) Lectures in Contemporary Biology, BSC6910 Directed Research or other courses approved by CMMB
  • Submission of a written scientific review on an approved topic
  • Successful completion of a final oral exam at the completion of the structured course work
  • For those students pursuing the M.S. in Microbiology, 15 of the 30 credit hours must be in courses of a microbiological nature. Approval of such courses will be made by the CMMB Graduate Director.

IMPORTANT - For those students working towards a non-thesis M.S. in Microbiology Degree:

15 of the total 30 hours needed to graduate must be microbiology-related courses. The CMMB Graduate Director must approve these courses for credit towards the degree.
