Microglia, the resident immune cells in the brain, are implicated in the process of alcohol-induced neuroinflammation. My project is to determine the molecular responses of microglia to alcohol using proteomic and transcriptomic approaches both in vivo and in vitro using cell culture systems. The goal of the research that I am conducting in Dr. Stevens’ lab is to define the phenotypic changes that occur in microglia due to alcohol exposure through quantitation of microglial protein expression on a global scale. Additionally, miRNA expression profiling will be performed in order to identify possible regulatory mechanisms associated with ethanol-induced proteome profile changes and related activation phenotype.
