Graduate Studies International Application Instructions

The Graduate Programs for the CMMB Division of Biology are:
  • Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Ph.D.
  • Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, M.S.
  • Microbiology, M.S.
Minimum Admission Requirements:
  • It is expected that candidates for the M.S./Ph.D. degrees will have completed courses equivalent to those required for the B.S. in Biology at U.S.F.
  • 3.0 GPA last 60 hours of B.S. Degree
  • GRE (minimum verbal score of 500, minimum quantitative score of 600, and minimum analytic score of 4.5.
  • The TOEFL is required with a minimum score of 79 (internet version), 213 (computer version), 550 (paper version).
  • We expect students to contact cmmb faculty via email to indicate an interest in the research being conducted in their laboratory. We will make every effort to pair potential graduate students with appropriate faculty.
Departmental Deadlines International Students
  • Your application file must be complete and received by the Biology Graduate Office before the following dates for Teaching Positions or the University Graduate Fellowship.
  • Deadline for application is  January 1 for August (Fall) term.

How Can I Apply?
  1. Go to the Graduate School website to apply on-line and pay with a credit card or to download the graduate application and pay with a check or money order. (see Useful links information box to the right)
  2. To obtain an Admission Information packet by mail, please email CMMB Graduate Office
  3. Obtain the recommendation request form.
  4. You must choose one of the following programs in your application in response to the question "What is your planned major?":

Masters Degrees

  • Biology-Cell & Molecular Biology, M.S.
  • Microbiology, M.S.

Doctoral Degrees

  • Biology-Cell & Molecular Biology, Ph.D.
When applying via the mail, the following items should be submitted to:

  1. Completed application form with a non refundable $30 application fee. Send only checks or money order made payable to the " University of South Florida ." The application and fee are valid for one year. Applications sent without the $30 application fee will not be processed. There are no waivers or deferments granted for this fee. Place check in the envelope, seal the envelope and sign the seal.
  2. Two official transcripts in a sealed envelope from each post-secondary institution. Transcripts of work competed at USF will be secured by the Office of Admissions. Hence, you need only to secure transcripts from other institutions for your application packet.
  3. Three letters of recommendation from faculty in sealed envelopes (on their university letterhead) with the envelope seal signed by the recommender. Students must also complete the Letter of Recommendation form and submit it to recommenders. If recommenders choose, they may send letters directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions [address above].
  4. A brief essay stating your intended field of research and professional goals. Please indicate your specific research interests, in order that we may refer your application to appropriate biology faculty members. In your essay please list 2-3 biology faculty members that you would like to have review your file. Acceptance into the biology graduate program requires the identification of specific faculty who are willing to direct your research.
  5. Official GRE scores. This exam must have been taken within the last five years. If you have confirmation from ETS that scores have been sent to USF (USF must be listed), you may include a photocopy of your confirmation notice in your application packet. OFFICIAL test scores must be sent to USF directly from the testing agency. The University of South Florida 's 4-digit institution code is: 5828.
Teaching Assistant Application and Information

If you wish to apply for a Teaching Assistant (TA) position, you must also complete and include the this form. Failure to do so will result in you not being considered for a teaching position. Please attach resume to teaching assistant application.

Deadlines for TA application:

The cmmb Graduate Office should receive your complete application for admissions at least two weeks before the following dates to be considered for a teaching position.

  • Fall Semester: Jan 1;
  • Spring Semester: Aug 1.

Additional International Requirement

International students who wish to qualify for a teaching assistantship must have a score of at least 5.0 on the TSE/SPEAK exam.

Salary rates for beginning students:

  • $11,032 up to $15,000 for qualified doctoral students (9 month appointment - fall + spring semesters)
  • $3,677 (Some students receive a 3 month summer appointment)

Reappointment may continue for a total of 10 semesters for doctoral students or 6 semesters for masters students or unless you complete the requirements for your degree earlier.

University Graduate Fellowship

Application forms will be mailed to eligible students. Criteria necessary for this fellowship:

  • GRE score [verbal + quantitative] is above 1250
  • Undergraduate upper division GPA at least 3.0
  • Graduate level GPA 3.5
  • Deadline: 1 January.
