National Science Foundation (NSF)
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

There is an amazing number of opportunities for undergraduates to receive funded (i.e. paid) research positions through NSF. There are programs for all areas of biology, including: botany, ecology, evolution, marine science, molecular biology, bioinformatics, cancer biology, and microbiology. You must be an academically competitive student pursing a bachelor's degree. Most of these programs take place in the summer and usually last about 10 weeks.

If you are interested, visit the NSF-REU Biological Sciences website. Application deadlines usually start in mid-January; very few are later than early March. In addition to the application, you will likely need the following:

  • Resume/CV
  • 2 faculty recommendation letters
  • Transcript
  • Personal statement

Please keep in mind that this type of research does not, and will not count, as Biology/Microbiology Major elective credit hours.
